Playing for time - a play

The Intercultural Society Motif from Bregenz has been working with professional theater-folk (directors, authors, voice coaches, actors) for years in order to put on an annual production whose main aim is integration, focusing on the co-existence of “locals” with “locals with a foreign background”. The present project goes one step further. “Playing for time” by Arthur Miller is based on the true story of Fania Fenelon, chanson singer from Paris who, being half-Jewish, is deported to Auschwitz during World War II and only survives by joining a so-called girls’ orchestra. The orchestra, established in 1943, was a chance for orchestra members to survive Auschwitz. Despite or perhaps because of this, the dilemma repeatedly surfaced within the orchestra, whether this way of surviving was morally defensible. This conflict is a central theme of the play.

Der interkulturelle Verein Motif aus Bregenz arbeitet schon seit Jahren mit professionellen Theatermenschen (Regisseuren, Autoren, Sprechtechnikcoaches, Schauspielern) zusammen, um einmal pro Jahr eine Theaterproduktion auf die Beine zu stellen, deren primäres Ziel die Integration ist und die das Zusammenleben von „Inländern“ mit „Inländern mit Migrationshintergrund“ in den Vordergrund stellt. Das aktuelle Projekt geht noch ein Stück weiter. „Spiel um Zeit“ von Arthur Miller ist angelehnt an die tatsächliche Geschichte der Fania Fenelon, Chansonsängerin aus Paris, die während des Zweiten Weltkriegs als Halbjüdin nach Auschwitz gebracht wird und dort nur deshalb überlebt, da sie dem so genannten Mädchenorchester beitritt. Das Orchester, das 1943 gegründet wurde, war eine Chance für die Orchestermitglieder, Auschwitz überleben zu können. Trotzdem oder gerade deswegen kamen innerhalb des Orchesters immer wieder Bedenken auf, ob diese Art von Überleben moralisch vertretbar war. Unter anderem ist dieser Konflikt ein zentrales Thema des Stücks.
