The author deals with the extent of draft evasion and analyses the variety of motives of the deserters in the men’s social surroundings from support to denunciation. She also investigates military justice and the military penal system as well as the origins and longevity of the demonization and prejudices against the deserters. In the final chapter, she takes a detailed look at the situation in post-war Austria and the political and social development in rehabilitation and compensation policies.

Die Autorin beschäftigt sich mit dem Umfang der Wehrdienstentziehungen und analysiert die vielfältigen Motive der Deserteure in dem sozialen Umfeld der Männer zwischen Unterstützung und Denunziation. Weiters untersucht sie sowohl die Wehrmachtsjustiz und den militärischen Strafvollzug als auch die Entstehung sowie die Langlebigkeit von Feindbildern und Vorurteilen gegenüber Deserteuren. Im letzten Kapitel geht sie detailliert auf die Situation im Nachkriegsösterreich und auf die politische und gesellschaftliche Entwicklung in der Rehabilitierungs- und Entschädigungspolitik ein.
