Peter Berczeller is 82 years old and originally comes from a Jewish family which, until their emigration, decisively shaped the history of Burgenland. Despite the flight and traumatic experiences, the Berczeller family has retained a close connection to Austria and, above all, Burgenland. In his memoirs, Peter Berczeller tells the story of the first three decades of his life, spanning an arch from Burgenland to America. Peter Berczeller’s father Richard was a general practitioner in Mattersburg. One of the author’s earliest childhood memories is their joint home visits and a “little white coat”, his pride and joy. The Berczeller family had to leave Austria in 1938 due to their Jewish roots and his father’s involvement with the Socialists. Their flight took them to Vienna, France and Africa, ending in New York. At this time, Peter Berczeller discovered his interest in medicine for the first time. He studied at the University of Chicago and opened a practice as Doctor of Internal Medicine in New York.

Peter Berczeller ist 82 Jahre alt, stammt ursprünglich aus einer jüdischen Familie, die die Geschichte des Burgenlandes bis zur Emigration intensiv mitgestaltet hat. Trotz Flucht und traumatischer Erlebnisse ist die Familie Berczeller Österreich und vor allem dem Burgenland bis heute tief verbunden geblieben. Peter Berczeller erzählt in seinen Memoiren die ersten drei Dekaden seines Lebens und schlägt einen Bogen vom Burgenland bis Amerika. Peter Berczellers Vater Richard war praktischer Arzt in Mattersburg. Zu den frühesten Kindheitserinnerungen des Autors gehören die gemeinsamen „Hausbesuche“ und ein kleiner weißer Arztmantel (the little white coat), der sein ganzer Stolz war. Die Familie Berczeller musste Österreich 1938 aufgrund ihrer jüdischen Abstammung und des sozialistischen Engagements des Vaters verlassen. Die Flucht führte über Wien, Frankreich und Afrika und endete schließlich in New York. Nach Ankunft der Familie in New York approbierte der Vater erneut. In dieser Zeit entdeckte Peter Berczeller erstmals sein Interesse für Medizin. Er selbst studierte an der Universität von Chicago und eröffnete seine eigene Ordination als Internist in New York.
