The Socialist educationalist Ernst Papanek emigrated from Vienna to Paris in 1938 and then on to America in 1940. He combined individual psychology, reform education and political elements so that promotion of the individual and self-initiative and living together with self-determination and assumption of responsibility were sustaining concepts in the eleven homes for refugee children throughout France with 1,600 children of different nationalities. This book contains his writings on children with experiences of persecution, flight and exile during the Nazi era and his educational and therapeutic work, selected reports, reflections and investigations. His work provides an insight into the work in the children’s homes, into the social and mental condition of exiled children. The publication of the book is of huge importance to his family.

Der aus Wien emigrierte sozialistische Pädagoge Ernst Papanek ist 1938 nach Paris emigriert und dann 1940 weiter in die USA. Er kombinierte individualpsychologische, reformpädagogische und politische Elemente, so dass konzeptionell die individuelle Förderung und Selbsttätigkeit sowie das Gemeinschaftsleben mit Mitbestimmung und Übernahme von Verantwortung in den elf über ganz Frankreich verteilten Flüchtlingskinder-Heimen mit 1.600 Kindern unterschiedlicher Nationalität tragend wurden. Das Buch bringt seine Schriften über Kinder mit Verfolgungs-, Flucht- und Exilerfahrungen während der NS-Zeit sowie Texte zur pädagogischen und therapeutischen Arbeit, ausgewählte Berichte, Reflexionen und Untersuchungen. Sein Werk gibt Einblick in die Arbeit in den Kinderheimen, in die soziale und psychische Lage exilierter Kinder. Das Erscheinen des Buches ist eine Herzensangelegenheit der Familie.
