Friedrich Torberg was one of the best and most famous Austrian writers, a local patriot from the sport club to the literary cafe. The typed manuscript of “That was also Vienna” is dated May 1938 – June 1939 / in Prague, Zurich and Paris” meaning that the entire draft of the novel was written during his escape, immediately after Torberg had had to leave Vienna and give it up for lost, hectically in search of a place to rescue him, offer him security and a replacement home or rather a homeland replacement. For nothing in the entire works of this author, so loyal to his homeland, proves more clearly and convincingly than this novel that he, who grew up partly in Vienna and partly in Prague, had matured into an “Urwiener” (“Viennese original”). The “Anschluss” in the night of 13 March 1938 seemingly within hours brought an end to everything that had ever been typical of Vienna, seen everywhere as the metropolis of conviviality. 75 years later, the publishers want to republish this wonderful and amusing book as it has been out of print for so long.

Friedrich Torberg war einer der besten und berühmtesten österreichischen Schriftsteller, Lokalpatriot vom Sportverein bis zum Literaten-Stammcafé. Das Typoskript zu „Auch das war Wien“ ist datiert mit „Mai 1938 – Juni 1939 / in Prag, Zürich und Paris“ und besagt, dass der ganze Romanentwurf während der Flucht entstanden ist, unmittelbar nachdem Torberg seinen Wohnsitz in Wien verlassen hatte und verloren geben musste, auf der hektischen Suche nach einem Ort, der Rettung, Sicherheit bieten und als Ersatz-Heimat dienen sollte, besser gesagt: als Heimat-Ersatz. Denn nichts im gesamten Œuvre dieses heimattreuen Schriftstellers belegt deutlicher und überzeugender als dieser Roman, dass der teils in Wien und teils in Prag Aufgewachsene zum „Urwiener“ herangereift war. Der „Anschluss“ in jener Nacht des 13. März 1938 machte binnen Stunden auch scheinbar Schluss mit allem, was seit jeher typisch gewesen war oder dafür gegolten hatte an Wien, überall angesehen als Metropole der Gemütlichkeit. 75 Jahre später will der Verlag dieses wunderbare und auch humorvolle Buch wieder auflegen, nachdem es lange vergriffen war.
