This publication seeks to investigate these pictures’ life of their own in the media, while also making a contribution to social science’s research into the visitors to memorials. It focuses on a specific practice of remembrance at the Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial, photographs that are taken, mostly by Austrian visitors during their tour of Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II. During a tour, visitors are on the lookout for “visual trophies” which make their trip seem worthy of remembering from hindsight and which are meant to depict the lessons of the past. In a social scientific introduction to this phenomenon, the publication addresses the question, what role is played by pictures, both for the individual and for social remembrance and what status Auschwitz has which combined with the history of its representation in the media.

Die Arbeit möchte sowohl das mediale Eigenleben dieser Bilder untersuchen wie auch einen Beitrag zur sozialwissenschaftlichen BesucherInnenforschung an Gedenkstätten leisten. Sie fokussiert dazu auf eine konkrete Gedächtnispraxis an der Gedenkstätte Auschwitz-Birkenau, Fotografien, die mehrheitlich österreichische BesucherInnen während ihres Rundgangs in Auschwitz I und Auschwitz ll machen. BesucherInnen sind während einer Führung auf der Suche nach „visuellen Trophäen“, die ihren Besuch im Nachhinein erinnerungswürdig machen und die Lehren aus der Vergangenheit abbilden sollen. In einer kulturwissenschaftlichen Heranführung an dieses Phänomen setzt sich die Arbeit mit der Frage auseinander, welche Rolle Bilder sowohl für die individuelle als auch für die soziale Erinnerung spielen und welcher Status dem Ort Auschwitz in der Verquickung mit seiner medialen Repräsentationsgeschichte zukommt.
