The aim of this project is the publication of a biography of Mopsa Sternheim marking the 60th anniversary of her death. Mopsa Sternheim, born 1905 in Düsseldorf-Oberkassel and an Austrian citizen following her marriage in 1939, was a biological daughter of the dramatist Carl Sternheim and counted among her friends Klaus and Erika Mann, with whom she contributed to the cultural and political events of 1920s and 1930s Europe. She lived in various places, from 1926 predominantly in Berlin and also often spent months at a time in Austria following her marriage to the Austrian surrealist painter and illustrator Rudolf Karl von Ripper, who later became part of Vienna’s post-war art scene and spent spells teaching at the Academy of Visual Arts. She went into exile in Paris where she was particularly vulnerable following the “Anschluss” of Austria in March 1938. In the 1940s she was active in the French resistance against the Nazis, before being arrested and tortured by the Secret State Police and deported to Ravensbrück concentration camp, from where she was not released until April 1945.

Gegenstand dieses Projekts ist die Publikation einer Biografie Mopsa Sternheims zu deren 60. Todesjahr. Mopsa Sternheim, geb. 1905 in Düsseldorf-Oberkassel und nach ihrer Heirat 1929 österreichische Staatsbürgerin, war eine leibliche Tochter des Dramatikers Carl Sternheim und u.a. eng mit Klaus und Erika Mann befreundet, mit denen sie vor allem in den 1920er- und 1930er-Jahren zum kulturellen und politischen Geschehen Europas beitrug. Sie lebte an unterschiedlichen Orten, vor allem ab 1926 in Berlin, und verbrachte nach ihrer Heirat mit dem österreichischen surrealistischen Maler und Illustrator Rudolf Carl von Ripper, der später Teil der Wiener Kunstszene der Nachkriegszeit war und zeitweise an der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien lehrte, auch mehrmonatige Aufenthalte in Österreich. Sie ging nach Paris ins Exil, wo ihre Situation besonders nach dem „Anschluss“ Österreichs im März 1938 sehr prekär war. In den 1940er-Jahren war sie in Frankreich im Widerstand gegen die Nazis tätig, bevor sie von der Gestapo verhaftet und gefoltert und im Konzentrationslager Ravensbrück inhaftiert wurde, aus dem sie erst im April 1945 wieder freikam.
