In service of humanity - The eventful history of the Austrian League of Human Rights

Im Dienste der Menschheit - Die wechselvolle Geschichte der Österreichischen Liga für Menschenrechte

 

The exhibition “In Service of Humanity” will be held from 23 October to 18 November 2013 in the foyer of the Vienna University Library. The Austrian League of Human Rights, founded in 1926 is the oldest Austrian human rights organization. Using the holdings of the University Library, the Archive of the Austrian League of Human Rights (stored at the Institute for Contemporary History of the University of Vienna since 2013) and previously unknown documents from Austrian, German, French and Russian archives, the exhibitions sheds light on the various periods of the organization’s activities “in service of humanity”, as stated by the organization’s motto and guiding principle. The exhibition will document numerous fates and, as such, contribute to a worthy commemoration of the victims of the Nazi policies of persecution and extermination. The workshop is particularly intended to illuminate relations between the European leagues of human rights in the first half of the 20th century which has so far scarcely been the subject of research.

Die Ausstellung „Im Dienste der Menschheit“ findet von 23. Oktober bis 18. November 2013 im Foyer der Universitätsbibliothek Wien statt. Die 1926 gegründete Österreichische Liga für Menschenrechte (ÖLfM) ist die älteste österreichische Menschenrechtsorganisation. Die Ausstellung wirft anhand der Bestände der Universitätsbibliothek Wien, des seit 2013 am Institut für Zeitgeschichte der Universität Wien einliegenden Archivs der ÖLfM sowie bislang unbekannten Materials aus österreichischen, deutschen, französischen und russischen Archiven Schlaglichter auf die verschiedenen Epochen des Wirkens dieser Organisation „im Dienste der Menschheit“ – so das Leitmotto der Liga. Die Ausstellung soll zahlreiche Schicksale dokumentieren und damit nicht zuletzt einen Beitrag dazu leisten, ein würdiges Andenken an die Opfer der nationalsozialistischen Verfolgungs- und Vernichtungspolitik zu wahren. Der dazu gehörige Workshop soll insbesondere auch dazu dienen, die bislang kaum erforschten Beziehungen der europäischen Menschenrechtsligen in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts auszuleuchten.
