Project

Description

The conference is being held in cooperation with the Vienna Lectures. With the National Socialist assumption of power and the “Anschluss” of Austria, children’s worlds, which were mostly described in interviews as being filled with a sense of wellbeing until this time, were shattered in an instant. The end of childhood, the way in which children were specifically affected by racial decrees, flight and expulsion and deportation to ghettos and concentration camps are is experiencing increasing interest among researchers. Therefore several panels are dedicated to this topic. The lectures cover such varying aspects as Kindertransporte from Austria to Scandinavia, children rescued by Christians in Poland by being baptized and hidden, unaccompanied children and young people in displaced persons camps and Jewish youth in Germany and the former Soviet Union from 1945 until today.
