Remembrance communites in Carinthia. National Socialism and the Second World War in the collective memory of the young.

The research project will pursue the question how contemporary eyewitnesses pass on memories to their grandchildren’s generation in Carinthia. The aim is to characterize the various Carinthian communities of remembrance and to understand what role is played by young people in the mutual discourse of the communities of remembrance. The project will span 26 months, of which the preparatory phase (6 months) has already been completed. From April 2014 the development of the Carinthian landscape of remembrance in Koroska over the last three decades will be described historically. The third part of the project will, in particular, deal with the surviving victims of National Socialism in Austria and their descendants up to the third generation – today’s young people. Qualitative biographical interviews will be carried out with eyewitnesses of National Socialism and their descendants who actively participate in these initiatives and with “unaffected” people involved in remembrance initiatives.

Das Forschungsprojekt geht der Leitfrage nach, wie in Kärnten Erinnerungen an die Enkelgeneration der ZeitzeugInnen weitergegeben werden. Ziel ist es, die verschiedenen „Kärntner Erinnerungsgemeinschaften“ zu charakterisieren und zu verstehen, welche Rolle Jugendliche im gemeinsamen Diskurs dieser Erinnerungsgemeinschaften spielen. Das Projekt ist auf insgesamt 26 Monate angelegt, wobei die Vorbereitungsphase (6 Monate) bereits abgeschlossen wurde. Ab April 2014 wird die Entwicklung der Kärntner „Erinnerungslandschaft“ in Koroška in den letzten 3 Jahrzehnten historisch beschrieben. Der dritte Projektteil befasst sich insbesondere mit den noch lebenden unmittelbaren Opfern des Nationalsozialismus in Österreich und ihren Nachkommen bis zur 3. Generation – den heutigen Jugendlichen. Es werden qualitative biographische Interviews mit ZeitzeugInnen des Nationalsozialismus und ihren Nachkommen, die in diesen Initiativen aktiv sind, sowie mit „unbetroffenen“ AkteurInnen der Erinnerungsinitiativen, geführt.
