The symposium deals with the topic of illegal border crossings and the refugee movements of the years 1933–1945. This form of border crossing and other illegal practices such as counterfeiting visas or documents were often lifesaving, even if those involved – persecutees and helpers – were often criminalized indiscriminately. It predominantly involved the (attempted) entry into potential transit and refuge countries, but also the flight from the German Reich, especially after the end of the period of being forced out and the prohibition of Jewish emigration in 1941. In addition, a side program with discussions and a film on the subject are planned.

Das Symposium setzt sich mit dem Thema der illegalen Grenzüberschreitungen und der Fluchtbewegungen der Jahre 1933–1945 auseinander. Diese Form des Grenzübertritts und andere nicht gesetzeskonforme Praktiken wie das Fälschen von Visa oder Dokumenten erwiesen sich vielfach als lebensrettend, auch wenn bereits damals die Beteiligten – Verfolgte wie Helferinnen und Helfer – oft in undifferenzierter Weise kriminalisiert wurden. Es ging dabei vor allem um die (versuchte) Einreise in potentielle Transit- und Zufluchtsländer, aber auch um die Flucht aus dem Deutschen Reich, besonders nach dem Ende der Vertreibungsphase und dem Verbot der jüdischen Auswanderung 1941. Zusätzlich ist ein Rahmenprogramm in Form von Diskussionsveranstaltungen sowie eines Filmschwerpunkts zum Thema geplant.
