In March 1945, 180 Hungarian Jewish slave laborers were murdered by the National Socialists while building the Southeast Wall. The mass grave has still not been found. On 24 March 2002, the Rechnitz refugee and memorial initiative, as its annual focus, held a remembrance ceremony at the memorial Kreuzstadl in Rechnitz for all victims of National Socialism who were murdered during the construction of the Southeast Wall. On the day before, 23 March 2002, a symposium with the subject “Auschwitz is a town in Poland. Stigmatized places – places of education for the future” was held. The aim of the symposium was to attempt to see the local National Socialist past and the crime which took place in Rechnitz in a European context.

Im März 1945 wurden 180 ungarisch-jüdische Zwangsarbeiter von den Nationalsozialisten beim Bau des Südostwalls im Burgenland ermordet. Das Massengrab wurde bis heute nicht gefunden. Am 24.3.2002 veranstaltet die Rechnitzer Flüchtlings- und Gedenkinitiative, als jährlichen Arbeitsschwerpunkt eine Gedenkfeier beim Mahnmal Kreuzstadl in Rechnitz für alle Opfer des Nationalsozialismus, die beim Bau des Südostwalls als Zwangsarbeiter umgebracht wurden. Am Vortag, dem 23.3.2002, findet ein Symposium bzw. eine Tagung mit dem Thema: 'Auschwitz ist eine Stadt in Polen. Stigmatisierte Orte - Lernorte für die Zukunft' statt. Das Ziel der Tagung ist der Versuch, die lokale nationalsozialistische Vergangenheit und die Verbrechen von Rechnitz in einem europäischen Zusammenhang zu sehen.
