Description
The project proposal is based on the preliminary findings of the report entitled „International Status of Education on the Holocaust: a Global Mapping of Textbooks and Curricula”, prepared by UNESCO and the Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research. This initial investigation comprises a quantitative mapping of the current status of teaching about the Holocaust in curricula worldwide, and a qualitative study of representations of the Holocaust in textbooks in a representative sample of approximately twenty countries around the world since 2000. The analysis aims to establish whether formal curricula requirements are consistent internationally and will provide basis to understand what epistemological (legal, political, economic, racial, religious or anti-Semitic) foundations are provided in textbooks to explain the causes and effects of the Holocaust and how they are distributed regionally.

Grundlage dieses Projekts sind die Erstergebnisse des Berichts „Der internationale Stand des Schulunterrichts über den Holocaust. Eine globale Erfassung der Lehrbücher und Lehrpläne“, der durch die UNESCO und das „Georg Eckert Institut – Leibniz-Institut für internationale Schulbuchforschung“ vorgelegt wurde. Diese Erstuntersuchung stellt anhand eines repräsentativen Samples von etwa 20 Ländern weltweit seit 2000 eine quantitative Erfassung des derzeitigen Stands des Holocaust-Unterrichts in Lehrplänen und eine qualitative Erforschung der Holocaust-Darstellungen in Lehrbüchern dar. Die Analyse soll feststellen, ob die formalen Lehrplanvoraussetzungen international konsistent sind. Darüber hinaus wird sie eine Grundlage für ein besseres Verständnis der Frage anbieten, welche epistemologischen oder ideologischen (legalen, wirtschaftlichen, religiösen oder antisemitischen) Grundlagen in den Lehrbüchern angegeben werden, um die Ursachen und Auswirkungen des Holocaust zu erklären und deren regionale Verteilung aufzuzeigen.
