In a mass grave on the Jewish cemetery in St. Pölten lie the mortal remains of 227 Hungarian-Jewish slave laborers – men, women and children – who were shot by the SS during the night of 2/3 May 1945. In 1964 these bodies were transferred to the Jewish cemetery in St. Pölten and buried in a mass grave 20 x 5 meters in size and covered in gravel. The simple commemorative stone bears the inscription “Here rest the mortal remains of 223 Jewish martyrs from the year 1945”, with a Hebrew translation. The names of those buried here are not immortalized. It is intended to erect a gravestone bearing all of the names, insofar as they can be reconstructed using the lists of the Nazi authorities and the survivors. The historical context will also be explained with a new text. The gravestone will be constructed from concrete slabs and the names will be engraved on satin-polished metal plaques. The mass grave will be cleaned, rebordered and covered in gravel. It will be erected on the 70th anniversary of the massacre, Sunday, 3 May 2015.

In einem Massengrab am jüdischen Friedhof St. Pölten ruhen die sterblichen Überreste von 227 ungarisch-jüdischen ZwangsarbeiterInnen – Männern, Frauen und Kindern –, die in der Nacht vom 2. auf den 3. Mai 1945 von SS-Männern erschossen wurden. 1964 wurden die Leichen auf den jüdischen Friedhof St. Pölten überführt und in einem 20 mal fünf Meter großen, mit Kies bedeckten Massengrab beerdigt. Der einfache Gedenkstein trägt die Inschrift: „Hier ruhen die sterblichen Überreste von 223 israelitischen Märtyrern des Jahres 1945“ mit hebräischer Übersetzung. Die Namen der Beerdigten sind hier nicht verewigt. Das Vorhaben setzt für die Beerdigten einen Grabstein mit allen Namen, soweit sie nach Listen der NS-Behörden und der Überlebenden rekonstruiert werden konnten. Des Weiteren wird durch einen neuen Text der historische Kontext erklärt. Der Grabstein wird aus beigen Betongussplatten errichtet, die Namen werden auf matt gestrahlten Metallplatten aufgebracht. Das Massengrab wird gereinigt, neu eingefasst und mit Kies aufgeschüttet. Die Steinsetzung erfolgte am 70. Jahrestag des Massakers, am Sonntag, den 3. Mai 2015.
