In 2015 the University of Vienna will be 650 years old. However, this anniversary is not cause for celebration alone. Although the “Alma Mater Rudolphina” was one of the world’s leading universities at the beginning of the 20th century, a century later it can no longer be found among the top 100 in virtually any of the university league tables. Much is known of the demise of the University of Vienna from 1938. However, so far the intellectual bloodletting that had already started after World War I has not been researched. Even as early as 1918, anti-Semitic, anti-leftist and misogynistic professors fought for hegemony at the University of Vienna until they could ultimately gain power at the University in 1938. This and other untouched subjects will be addressed in this book.

2015 wird die Universität Wien 650 Jahre alt. Doch dieses Jubiläum gibt nicht nur Anlass zum Feiern. Zwar zählte die „Alma mater Rudolphina“ zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts noch zu den weltweit führenden Universitäten, ein Jahrhundert später rangiert sie jedoch in so gut wie allen internationalen Hochschulrankings jenseits der ersten 100. Vieles ist über die Geschichte des Niedergangs der Universität Wien ab 1938 bekannt. Unerforscht blieb bislang jedoch der intellektuelle Aderlass, der bereits nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg an der Universität eingesetzt hatte. Bereits um 1918 erkämpften sich antisemitische, anti-linke und frauenfeindliche Professoren die Hegemonie an der Universität Wien, bis sie schließlich 1938 die Herrschaft an der Hochschule antreten konnten. Diese und andere unangetasteten Themen werden vom Autor Klaus Taschwer in diesem Buch zur Sprache gebracht.
