In 2007, Richard Wadani was the first Austrian deserter from the German Wehrmacht to be awarded the Medal of Honor for services towards the liberation of Austria. This was a hard fought step towards recognition that would be followed by others: in 2009 the so-called Act on Recognition and Rehabilitation for People Persecuted by Nazi Court Martial and finally, in 2014, the unveiling of a memorial for deserters on Vienna’s Ballhausplatz. He was born to Austrian parents and grew up in the revolutionary Prague of the 1920s and 1930s until his path took him unwillingly to Vienna and just as against his will into the German Wehrmacht. In October 1944 he deserted on the Western Front, running across to join the Allies. He returned to Vienna in 1945 wearing a British uniform. In October 2012, Richard Wadani celebrated his 90th birthday.

2007 wurde Richard Wadani als erstem österreichischen Wehrmachtsdeserteur das Ehrenzeichen für Verdienste um die Befreiung Österreichs verliehen. Ein mühsam erkämpfter Schritt, dem noch andere wichtige Etappen folgen sollten: 2009 das sogenannte Anerkennungs- und Rehabilitierungsgesetz für die Verfolgten der NS-Militärjustiz, 2014 schließlich die Enthüllung eines Deserteur Denkmals am Wiener Ballhausplatz. Aufgewachsen als Sohn österreichischer Eltern im revolutionären Prag der 1920er und 30er Jahre, führt sein Weg 1938 unfreiwillig nach Wien, ebenso widerwillig in die Wehrmacht. Im Oktober 1944 läuft er an der Westfront zu den Alliierten über. In der Uniform der Briten kehrt er 1945 nach Wien zurück. Im Oktober 2012 feierte Richard Wadani seinen 90. Geburtstag.
