This book provides the interested reader with an insight into the repercussions of Nazi healthcare policies. Taking as an example the residents of a single institution, which had been committed to accommodating, caring for and educating mentally handicapped children and young people since 1923, it becomes apparent to what horrific extent the collision of Nazi dictatorship and ideology in the name of a healthy body of the German nation led to coercive measures and euthanasia murders. The main aim of this publication is to identify as many victims of Nazi euthanasia and forced sterilization as possible, in order to be able to remember them in a fitting manner. Their fate forms the focus of the book. In consultation with the institution’s management, Caritas Salzburg, the euthanasia victims shall be listed with their forenames and the first letter of their surnames; the victims of forced sterilization will not be mentioned by name out of consideration for their families. At the same time, this book expresses the extent of the anguish of one of the – with 100 beds at the time in question – larger Austrian institutions for mentally and/or physically handicapped children, youths and young adults.

Das Buch ermöglicht interessierten LeserInnen einen Einblick in die Folgen nationalsozialistischer Gesundheitspolitik. Anhand der BewohnerInnen einer einzigen Anstalt, die sich seit 1923 im Salzburger Pinzgau der Unterbringung, Betreuung und Bildung geistig beeinträchtigter Kinder und Jugendlicher gewidmet hat, wird ersichtlich, in welch erschreckendem Ausmaß das Zusammenwirken nationalsozialistischer Diktatur und Ideologie im Namen des gesunden Volkskörpers zu Zwangsmaßnahmen und zu Euthanasie-Morden geführt hat. Vorrangiges Ziel dieser Publikation ist es, möglichst alle Opfer der NS-Euthanasie und der Zwangssterilisation, auch als Grundlage für ein angemessenes Gedenken, zu identifizieren. Ihr Schicksal steht im Zentrum des Buches. In Absprache mit dem Träger der Anstalt, dem Caritasverband Salzburg, werden die Euthanasie-Opfer nur mit Vornamen und dem jeweiligen Anfangsbuchstaben des Nachnamens, die Opfer der Zwangssterilisation aus Rücksicht der betroffenen Personen und ihre Angehörige nicht namentlich genannt. Gleichzeitig soll mit dieser Arbeit das Ausmaß der Betroffenheit einer der zur fraglichen Zeit mit 100 Betten größeren österreichischen Anstalten für geistig und/oder körperlich beeinträchtigte Kinder, Jugendliche und junge Erwachsene vermittelt werden.
