The literature, documentation and research on the Theresienstadt Ghetto have all dealt in depth with the Jewish administration, the daily life of the inmates and the work in the ghetto. There is also a great volume of information on the artistic and cultural life there and the children’s and youth organizations. However, there is very limited knowledge about the lives of the older camp inmates. There are very few survivors’ recollections in this regard. Therefore the diary of Camilla Hirsch is all the more rare as a document substantiating the Shoah, as it provides a firsthand account of the lives of the elderly in the ghetto. It covers the entire period from Camilla Hirsch’s internment until ten months after her liberation and begins on 10 July 1942 with her being forced to leave her apartment in Vienna. At this time she is already 73 years old. The original document, which is stored at the museum Beth Therezin at the Kibbutz Givat Haim – Israel was translated into Hebrew with the assistance of Beth Therezin and published in December 2011. The German edition will be published in spring 2016 by Mandelbaum Publishers.

Literatur, Dokumentation und Forschung zum Ghetto Theresienstadt beschäftigen sich ausführlich mit der jüdischen Führung, dem Alltag der Insassen und der Arbeit im Ghetto. Auch über das künstlerische und kulturelle Leben sowie über die Kinder- und Jugendorganisationen gibt es zahlreiche Informationen. Sehr gering ist jedoch das Wissen über das Leben der alten Menschen im Ghetto. Erinnerungen von Überlebenden gibt es in diesem Zusammenhang nur sehr wenige. Dementsprechend ist das Tagebuch von Camilla Hirsch ein seltener Beleg zur Dokumentation der Shoa, da hier das Leben der alten Menschen im Ghetto aus erster Hand dargestellt wird. Es umfasst den gesamten Zeitraum von Camilla Hirschs Inhaftierung sowie weitere zehn Monate nach ihrer Befreiung und beginnt am 10. Juli 1942 mit der Vertreibung aus ihrer Wohnung in Wien. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt ist sie bereits 73 Jahre alt. Das Original, das an das Museum Beth Therezin im Kibbutz Givat Haim – Israel aufbewahrt wird, wurde mit Hilfe von Beth Therezin ins Hebräische übersetzt und ist im Dezember 2011 erschienen. Die deutsche Ausgabe soll im Frühjahr 2016 im Mandelbaum Verlag folgen.
