This book does not address the question of whether Antisemitism had existed in the post-war years but instead looks at how it influenced the construction of the Second Republic. The active and non-active Antisemitism of the political elites manifested itself in the political policies regarding de-nazification, grudging restitution and the failure to invite back those who had fled their homeland. In order to illustrate the Antisemitism that was propagated by the political elites during the formative years of the Second Republic, Barbara Serloth has appraised, firstly, the actual status and the framework conditions that existed at that time and, secondly, the political discourse, particularly the discussions within the parliamentary debates concerning questions of re-immigration, victims’ welfare, and reparations. Questions that stand in causal relation to these topics include the management of the de-nazification, the reintegration and status of the surviving concentration camp victims.

In diesem Buch wird nicht der Frage nachgegangen, ob es in Österreich in den Nachkriegsjahren Antisemitismus gab, sondern welchen Einfluss dieser auf die Konstruierung der Zweiten Republik hatte. Der aktive und nicht-aktive Antisemitismus der politischen Eliten offenbarte sich in den Willensbildungsprozessen rund um die Entnazifizierung, die widerwillige Restitution oder der nicht erfolgten Einladung zur Rückkehr in die alte Heimat. Um den Antisemitismen, die innerhalb der politischen Eliten der Gründungsjahre der Zweiten Republik vertreten wurde, veranschaulichen zu können, hat Barbara Serloth einerseits den Ist-Zustand und die Rahmenbedingungen, die in dieser Zeit gegeben waren, andererseits den politischen Diskurs - vor allem die Erörterungen über die Re-Emigrations-, die Opferfürsorge- und Wiedergutmachungsfragen innerhalb der parlamentarischen Debatten - aufgearbeitet. Kausal mit diesen Themen sind die Fragen der Handhabung der Entnazifizierung, der Wiedereingliederung und des Stellenwertes der überlebenden KZ-Häftlinge verbunden.
