The Impact of National Socialism on the History of the Austrian League for Human Rights and the European Human Rights Leagues

 

The anthology will be published in the English language and is intended to enable the scientific community and an interested public to access the results of a workshop funded by the National Fund that was held at the Institute of History at the University of Vienna in cooperation with the Austrian League of Human Rights. This workshop brought together the academics and activists who deal with the history of leagues of human rights established in various European countries and focused on the time from the foundation of the French League of Human Rights in 1898 until World War II. The publication, which will be published as part of the series “Historical Disclosures of the Ranke Society – Supplements” by the Franz Steiner Publishers (Stuttgart), will for the first time provide an overview of the international research on the leagues of human rights in the first half of the 20th century, which documents the role of these organizations in the fight against anti-Semitism before and after World War II, their fates and those of their members during the National Socialist era and their role in the universalization of human rights in the 20th century. The contribution to history made by the Austrian league can serve as a model for research into other leagues whose history in many instances still remains obscure. The Austrian league was founded in 1926 and dissolved itself in 1938 in order to preempt its dissolution by the Nazi regime. This did not, however, suffice to prevent many of its members being persecuted, expelled and murdered.

Der in englischer Sprache geplante Sammelband soll die Ergebnisse eines vom Nationalfonds geförderten Workshops, der am 23. und 24. Mai 2014 am Institut für Geschichte der Universität Wien als Kooperation mit der Österreichischen Liga für Menschenrechte stattfand, für die „Scientific Community“ und eine interessierte Öffentlichkeit zugänglich machen. Dieser versammelte jene WissenschaftlerInnen und AktivistInnen, die sich mit der Geschichte der seit dem späten 19. Jahrhundert in verschiedenen europäischen Ländern gegründeten Menschenrechtsligen beschäftigen und fokussierte die Zeit von der Gründung der französischen Liga für Menschenrechte 1898 bis nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Mit dem Band, der in der Reihe „Historische Mitteilungen der Ranke-Gesellschaft – Beihefte“ im Franz Steiner Verlag (Stuttgart) erscheinen soll, wird erstmals ein Überblick über die internationale Forschung zu den Menschenrechtsligen in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts geschaffen, der die Rolle dieser Organisationen im Kampf gegen den Antisemitismus vor und nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, ihre Schicksale und die ihrer Mitglieder im Nationalsozialismus sowie ihren Anteil an einer Universalisierung der Menschenrechte im 20. Jahrhundert dokumentiert. Der Beitrag zur Geschichte der österreichischen Liga kann dabei als Forschungsmodell für andere Ligen gelten, deren Geschichte vielfach noch im Dunklen liegt. Die österreichische Liga wurde 1926 gegründet und löste sich 1938 selbst auf, um der Auflösung durch die Nationalsozialisten zuvorzukommen. Dies verhinderte jedoch nicht, dass viele ihrer Mitglieder verfolgt, vertrieben und ermordet wurden.
