From 16 April to 3 July 2015 the exhibition 41 Days. End of the War in 1945. Culmination of Violence” was on display on Vienna’s Heldenplatz and in the crypt of the Heroes’ Memorial. At the initiative of the City of Graz, it will now be shown in Graz from 13 October to 11 November. The exhibition, held in the Year of Remembrance 2015, has been met with great public interest. Despite the (as yet) unfamiliar exhibition location – it was the first time that an exhibition had been displayed in the crypt of the Heroes’ Memorial – 5,817 visitors were counted, among them 61 school classes. The considerable media interest in the exhibition is also worthy of note. In order to position the new Austrian culture of remembrance in a European and international sphere of communication, it is necessary to make the project accessible to a wider public in the form of a bi-lingual publication (German/English)This publication will not only portray the main theme of the exhibition – the Nazi crimes perpetrated during the final days of the war on Austrian territory – but shall also include additional articles providing information on the academic/curative concept, the design principles and the educational concept for school groups. With the documentation of the exhibition “41 Days. The End of the War in 1945 – Culmination of Violence”, a further aim of the publication is to convey to interested parties the clear position taken by Austria in terms of historical policy and the culture of remembrance – also within the European and international sphere of communication – and to maintain awareness of it in the future.

Vom 16. April bis 3. Juli 2015 wurde am Wiener Heldenplatz und in der Krypta des Heldendenkmals die Ausstellung „41 Tage. Kriegsende 1945 – Verdichtung der Gewalt“ gezeigt. Auf Initiative der Stadt Graz hin wird sie nun von 13. Oktober bis 11. November 2015 in Graz zu sehen sein. Diese Ausstellung zum Gedenkjahr 2015 ist auf großes öffentliches Interesse gestoßen. Trotz des (noch) nicht geläufigen Ausstellungsortes – erstmals wurde eine Ausstellung in der Krypta des Österreichischen Heldendenkmals gezeigt – wurden 5817 BesucherInnen gezählt, darunter 61 Schulklassen. Hinzuweisen ist auch auf das beträchtliche mediale Interesse. Um die Positionierung der neuen österreichischen Erinnerungskultur in einem europäischen beziehungsweise internationalen Kommunikationsraum sichtbar zu machen und nachhaltig zu verankern, ist es notwendig, die Ausstellung in Form einer zweisprachigen Publikation (deutsch/englisch) einem breiten interessierten AdressatInnenkreis zugänglich zu machen. Durch diese Publikation soll einerseits das Thema der Ausstellung – die NS-Verbrechen in der Phase des Kriegsendes auf österreichischem Boden – dargestellt werden, andererseits beleuchten ergänzende Beiträge beispielsweise das wissenschaftlich-kuratorische Konzept, die Prinzipien der Gestaltung und das Vermittlungskonzept für SchülerInnen. Ziel der Publikation ist es darüber hinaus, mit der Dokumentation der Ausstellung „41 Tage. Kriegsende 1945 – Verdichtung der Gewalt“ die österreichische geschichtspolitische und erinnerungskulturelle Positionsbestimmung im Gedenkjahr 2015 an interessierte Kreise – auch im europäischen und internationalen Kommunikationsraum – zu vermitteln und für die Zukunft präsent zu halten.
