Forschen und Erinnern. Orte nationalsozialistischer Endphasenverbrechen im heutigen Burgenland

 

The project “Research and Remembrance” aims to identify all locations in Burgenland that became the scene of atrocities against Hungarian Jews in 1944/45, to collect sources, and, where possible, to verify the names of the victims. Furthermore, in partnership with Burgenland communities, locations will be proposed for places of remembrance that can form the basis for initiating targeted projects of remembrance. In this year of commemoration and remembrance, the geo-spatial approach to the subject of the final phase atrocities in Burgenland therefore offers the opportunity to realize that “world history” also happened on a smaller scale in people’s own hometowns. Nazi crimes did not only take place, apparently unnoticed, in distant places. In the first year, the districts Neusiedl, Eisenstadt, Mattersburg and Oberpullendorf shall be subject to investigation. All data researched during the course of the project will be provided in digital form to the Documentation Centre of Austrian Resistance and the Burgenland Provincial Archives for research purposes.

Das Projekt „Forschen und Erinnern" setzt sich zum Ziel alle burgenländischen Orte, an denen 1944/45 Verbrechen an ungarischen Juden begangen wurden, zu identifizieren, Quellen zu sammeln und nach Möglichkeit die Namen der Opfer zu verifizieren. Des Weiteren sollen in Zusammenarbeit mit den burgenländischen Gemeinden Gedenkorte vorgeschlagen werden, um darauf aufbauend gezielte Gedenkprojekte zu initiieren. Der räumlich-geographische Zugang zum Thema der Endphasenverbrechen im Burgenland bietet somit im Gedenk- und Erinnerungsjahr die Möglichkeit zur Feststellung, dass die „große Weltgeschichte“ auch kleinräumig in der engeren Heimat gewirkt hat. NS-Verbrechen fanden nicht nur weit entfernt und angeblich unbemerkt statt, sondern auch unmittelbar vor der Haustüre der BurgenländerInnen Im ersten Jahr werden die Bezirke Neusiedl, Eisenstadt, Mattersburg und Oberpullendorf Untersuchungsgegenstand sein. Alle im Zuge des Projektes recherchierten Daten werden in digitaler Form dem Dokumentationsarchiv des österreichischen Widerstandes (DÖW) und dem Burgenländischem Landesarchiv für Forschungszwecke zur Verfügung gestellt.
