The “Museum of the Working World” is applying to present the international traveling exhibition “Slave Labor. The Germans, the Slave Laborers and the War”, which is planned to take place in Steyr from May to December 2016. From June 2015 contents of the exhibition will be adapted in consensus with the memorials at Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora in order to place more emphasis on the role played by Austria and the Austrian contribution to the system of slave labor as a society of perpetrators/bystanders under the Nazis. In addition to additional research, designing elements of the exhibition and supplementing the accompanying publication, the exhibition’s title will also be adapted with a view to its new context. A series of educational programs, each with a specific target group, will also accompany the exhibition as well as supporting events. The exhibition will be shown in Steyr, Linz and Vienna. Since autumn 2013 the museum has been working intensively with the Steyr Mauthausen Committee for the outside exhibition at the authentic place of remembrance “Tunnel of Remembrance”. The permanent exhibition on the concentration camp Steyr-Münichholz and slave labor in Steyr is a former air raid shelter constructed by concentration camp inmates and civil slave laborers. It therefore stands to reason that the two exhibitions “Slave Labor” and “Tunnel of Remembrance” be linked in some way. This will result in synergy effects, particularly in the educational program.

Das „Museum Arbeitswelt“ bewirbt sich um die Präsentation der internationalen Wanderausstellung „Zwangsarbeit. Die Deutschen, die Zwangsarbeiter und der Krieg“, die von Mai bis Dezember 2016 in Steyr stattfinden soll. Die Ausstellung wird gemeinsam mit den Gedenkstätten Buchenwald und Mittelbau-Dora ab Juni 2015 inhaltlich adaptiert, um den Fokus auf den Anteil Österreichs und den Beitrag der ÖsterreicherInnen als (Mit-)Täter-Gesellschaft am System der Zwangsarbeit im Nationalsozialismus zu legen. Neben zusätzlichen Recherchen, Gestaltung von Ausstellungselementen und Erweiterung des Begleitbandes wird auch der Titel der Ausstellung mit Hinblick auf den österreichischen Kontext neu gestaltet. Eine Serie von zielgruppenspezifischen Vermittlungsprogrammen und Rahmenveranstaltungen werden die Ausstellung begleiten, die neben Steyr auch in Wien und Linz stattfindet. Seit Herbst 2013 besteht eine intensive Zusammenarbeit mit dem Mauthausen Komitee Steyr für die Außenausstellung im authentischen Gedenkort „Stollen der Erinnerung“. Schauplatz der Dauerausstellung über das KZ Steyr-Münichholz und Zwangsarbeit in Steyr ist ein ehemaliger Luftschutzbunker, der von KZ-Häftlingen und zivilen Zwangsarbeitern errichtet wurde. Eine Verknüpfung der beiden Ausstellungen „Zwangsarbeit“ und „Stollen der Erinnerung“ ist darum naheliegend und wird vor allem bei den pädagogischen Vermittlungsprogrammen zu vielen Synergie-Effekten führen.
