The starting point for this project is the renewal of the Austrian exhibition at the State Museum Auschwitz-Birkenau. Within the scope of this renewal the participation of Austrians in the multitudinous aspects of the crimes committed at Auschwitz-Birkenau must be examined, as this element was not addressed in the previous exhibition that opened in 1978. The discussion that has since taken place about handing down a “traditional” view of history and about Austria officially assuming “shared responsibility” (Franz Vranitzky) for the crimes of the Nazi regime will also be taken into account when dealing with the question of Austrians’ individual culpability for perpetrating crimes at Auschwitz concentration camp. A key area of interest for the researchers lies in a quantificational investigation of the Austrians in the concentration camp SS Auschwitz, an analysis of their origin and socialization, their financial and familial circumstances, their careers and, in particular, the involvement of Austrian individuals in the crimes committed at the camp. In addition, using collective biographies the researchers hope to establish whether and, if so, which networks were formed among the Austrians at Auschwitz or had already been established before being assigned to Auschwitz. If the possibility arises, the researcher will also investigate whether the act of committing mass murder as part of a group served to strengthen group identity, whether, and to what extent, the daily practices (of murder) became mundane and what strategies the SS men and women later used to justify their actions.

Ausgangspunkt für das gegenständliche Projekt ist die Neugestaltung der österreichischen Ausstellung im Staatlichen Museum Auschwitz-Birkenau. In deren Rahmen ist auch die Beteiligung von ÖsterreicherInnen im Zusammenhang mit dem Verbrechenskomplex Auschwitz-Birkenau zu behandeln, da diese in der 1978 eröffneten österreichischen Ausstellung unberücksichtigt geblieben ist. Der seither stattgefundenen Diskussion tradierter Geschichtsbilder und der Übernahme der „Mitverantwortung“ (Franz Vranitzky) für die Verbrechen des NS-Regimes seitens des offiziellen Österreichs wird auch hinsichtlich der Thematisierung der Verantwortung von ÖsterreicherInnen an den im KZ Auschwitz verübten Verbrechen Rechnung getragen. Im Mittelpunkt des Forschungsinteresses steht neben der quantifizierenden Untersuchung der ÖsterreicherInnen im Konzentrationslager-SS Auschwitz die Analyse ihrer Herkunft und Sozialisation, ihre wirtschaftliche Situation und Familienverhältnisse, die Karriereverläufe und insbesondere die Involvierung von ÖsterreicherInnen in die vor Ort begangenen Verbrechen. Darüber hinaus soll anhand von Kollektivbiografien festgestellt werden, ob und welche Netzwerke sich unter den ÖsterreicherInnen in Auschwitz bildeten beziehungsweise vor der Überstellung nach Auschwitz bereits bestanden haben. Zu untersuchen ist nach Möglichkeit auch, ob der gemeinschaftlich verübter Massenmord die Gruppenidentität förderte, ob und inwiefern die tägliche (Mord-)Praxis als Normalität wahrgenommen wurde und mit welchen Strategien sich die SS-Angehörigen später zu rechtfertigen versuchten.
