Victims of atrocities in the Municipality of Sittersdorf 1938-1945

Twenty-five residents of the Municipality lost their lives during the Second World War and to date there has still not been any attempt to publicly come to terms with this event. The majority of victims perished due to the fact that they had belonged to the Slovene minority and had not wanted to deny their mother tongue or had joined the active resistance against the Nazis. However, people also became victims due to executions of opponents of the resistance, above all at the end of the war. Seventy years after World War II, these people will finally be given the place they deserve in the public realm, in the form of a memorial plaque at the local cemetery beside the plaque that already exists to remember the fallen members of the German Wehrmacht. It will be accompanied by a hardback brochure which gives, in part, detailed descriptions of events and a list of the victims, serving as a documentation of the reality.

25 Einwohner der Gemeinde verloren während des Zweiten Weltkrieges ihr Leben und bis heute hat es noch keine öffentliche Aufarbeitung dazu gegeben. Die meisten Opfer gab es aufgrund ihrer Zugehörigkeit zur slowenischen Volksgruppe, da sie ihre Muttersprache nicht verleugnen wollten oder weil sie sich dem aktiven Widerstand angeschlossen hatten. Opfer gab es jedoch auch durch Exekutionen von Gegnern des Widerstandes, vor allem gegen Ende des Krieges. Allen diesen Personen soll, 70 Jahre nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges, der ihnen zustehenden Platz in der Öffentlichkeit gegeben werden, welcher in Form einer Gedenktafel am Ortsfriedhof neben der bereits bestehenden Gedenktafel für gefallene Wehrmachtsangehörige realisiert werden soll. Begleitend dazu soll eine gebundene Broschüre mit zum Teil detaillierter Beschreibung des Geschehens aufgelegt werden, in welcher alle Todesopfer erfasst sind und die der Dokumentation der Realität dienen wird.
