As a result of the great movement of refugees and migrants, in 2015/16 the refugee crisis has been the subject of much discussion in Austria and in many other European countries, and during the course of these discussions parallels have often been drawn to the Nazi era. Whereas some people argue that given its own experiences with Nazism and the Holocaust, Europe has an obligation to offer refuge to those in flight, particularly those fleeing the Syrian civil war, others take the same points of historical reference and use them to argue to the contrary, demanding that Europe close its borders to the predominantly Muslim immigrants. The key question that erinnern.at has been posing for a long time about the relevance of remembering the events of the Nazi era is understood in an almost existential dimension: What has it got to do with me? In the 15th Central Seminar 2015/2016, “erinnern.at” wants to delve deeper into the question as to the importance of remembrance of the Holocaust to enable us to understand our current situation. This will be done with a particular focus on the Province of Carinthia where questions of identity and belonging, endemic or foreign, have already been subject to close examination for a long time. At the moment Carinthia’s role as a borderland is subject to particular emphasis in discussions about fences, control systems with gates and even the deployment of the Federal Army.

2015/16 wird angesichts der Flucht- und Zuwanderungsbewegung in Österreich wie in vielen anderen europäischen Ländern über die „Flüchtlingskrise" diskutiert und dabei häufig auf die Zeit des Nationalsozialismus Bezug genommen. Während manche argumentieren, gerade wegen der europäischen Erfahrungen mit Nationalsozialismus und Holocaust sei Europa verpflichtet, insbesondere den aus dem syrischen Bürgerkrieg fliehenden Menschen Schutz und Aufenthalt zu gewähren, so argumentieren andere mit denselben historischen Bezügen gerade gegenteilig und fordern die Abgrenzung Europas vor der überwiegend muslimischen Zuwanderung. Die von „erinnern.at“ schon seit langem formulierte zentrale Frage nach der Aktualität der NS-Erinnerung wird als geradezu existentiell begriffen: Was hat das mit mir zu tun? Im 15. Zentralen Seminar 2015/16 will „erinnern.at“ sich mit dieser Frage der Bedeutung der Erinnerung an den Holocaust für das Verständnis unserer Gegenwart befassen. Und dies mit besonderem Fokus auf das Bundesland Kärnten, wo Fragen von Identität und Zugehörigkeit, von heimisch und fremd schon lange mit großer Schärfe verhandelt werden. Aktuell wird der Grenzlandcharakter von Kärnten wieder betont, wenn von Zäunen, Leitsystemen mit Toren und gar vom Einsatz des Bundesheeres zur Grenzsicherung die Rede ist.
