Description
The proposed research will focus on three areas, the first being the documentation and analysis of Austrian inmates of the Ravensbrück and Uckermark concentration camps who were stigmatized as “asocials”. The second area of research will focus on the circumstances leading up to their internment in these concentration camps. Thirdly, researchers will look into the degree to which the discrimination and exclusion was perpetuated and, as such, how postwar Austria treated those who had been persecuted as “asocial”. This will be investigated by assessing the approach of the authorities, e.g. in the wording, amendment and application of the Victims’ Welfare Act and the continuation of the welfare files opened during the Nazi era.

Das Forschungsvorhaben fokussiert sich auf drei Themenschwerpunkte: Zum Ersten auf die Dokumentation und Analyse der als „asozial“ stigmatisierten österreichischen Inhaftierten im nationalsozialistischen Konzentrationslager Ravensbrück und im Mädchenkonzentrationslager Uckermark. Der zweite Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Erforschung der Vorgeschichte der KZ-Einweisung. Drittens geht es um die Kontinuitäten von Diskriminierung und Ausgrenzung – und damit um den Umgang Nachkriegsösterreichs mit den als „asozial“ Verfolgten. Dies wird in erster Linie anhand des behördlichen Vorgehens untersucht, etwa im Zuge der Formulierung, Novellierungen und Anwendung des Opferfürsorgegesetzes oder anhand der Fortführung von in der NS-Zeit angelegten Fürsorgeakten.
