The circumstances for female Jewish artists prior to 1938 were extremely poor. This makes it all the more astonishing that so many women were able to prevail in this field. A large number of them came from assimilated Jewish families. Painters like Tina Blau, Broncia Koller, Marie Louise von Motesiczky or the ceramicist Vally Wieselthier and Susi Singer have found their place in art history. However, many others have, unjustifiably, been forgotten, such as the sculptor Theresa Feodorwna Ries, the painters Gerte Wolf-Krakauer and Helene Taussig or the painter and graphic designer Lilli Rethi. The exhibition introduces 40 artists and describes their extraordinary paths of their training and careers.

Die Rahmenbedingungen für Wiener Künstlerinnen waren vor 1938 denkbar schlecht. Umso erstaunlicher ist es, wie viele Frauen sich in diesem Metier durchsetzen konnten. Ein großer Teil von ihnen kam aus assimilierten jüdischen Familien. Malerinnen wie Tina Blau, Broncia Koller, Marie Louise von Motesiczky oder die Keramikerinnen Vally Wieselthier und Susi Singer haben ihren Platz in der Kunstgeschichte gefunden. Doch viele andere sind – zu Unrecht - in Vergessenheit geraten, wie die Bildhauerin Theresa Feodorowna Ries, die Malerinnen Grete Wolf-Krakauer und Helene Taussig oder die Malerin und Graphikerin Lili Rethi. Die Ausstellung stellt 40 Künstlerinnen vor und zeichnet deren außergewöhnliche Ausbildungs- und Karrierewege nach.
