Memorial for the Hungarian Jews murdered in Gratkorn during the death march in 1945

On the territory of Gratkorn, groups of Hungarian Jews made attempts to flee, albeit unsuccessfully. Those who fled were captured in the forest of the Eggenfeldkogel and shot and burned. In July 1945, several victims were found in Eggenfeld and interred in the Jewish cemetery in Graz. Although it was known which SS unit was responsible for this crime, none of the perpetrators was ever brought to justice; in Gratkorn itself no one spoke of it. In 2016 a memorial will be created.

Im Gebiet von Gratkorn unternahmen Gruppen von ungarischen Juden Fluchtversuche, die jedoch misslangen. Die Entflohenen wurden im Waldgebiet des Eggenfeldkogels und in der Dult aufgegriffen, erschossen und verscharrt. Im Juli 1945 wurden einige Opfer in Eggenfeld gefunden und im Israelitischen Friedhof Graz bestattet. Obwohl man wusste, welche Einheit der Waffen-SS für diese Verbrechen verantwortlich war, wurde keiner der Täter je zur Rechenschaft gezogen; in Gratkorn wurde darüber nicht gesprochen. 2016 soll eine Gedenkstätte errichtet werden.
