In 1983, the critic and writer Hans Weigel (1909–1991) described his return from Swiss exile in autumn 1945 as a “fairytale return”. Within a matter of months Weigl had succeeded in finding his feet in the cultural sector, celebrating successes as a playwright and publicist. As such, the Jewish re-immigrant Weigel was a rare exception, with regards to both his early return and his successful integration. The book project investigates the terms and the conditions of this influential and exemplary post-war career, creating an academic monography on the life and work of Weigel, the 25th anniversary of whose death falls in 2016. A key element for the work is the question of what, in exile, formed the foundation for his reimmigration. While light is shed on Weigl’s reimmigration, the way in which he dealt with the term “victim” is also subject to close scrutiny.

Der Kritiker und Schriftsteller Hans Weigel (1908 – 1991) bezeichnete 1983 seine Rückkehr aus dem Schweizer Exil nach Österreich im Herbst 1945 als „Bilderbuch Heimkehr“. Weigel gelang es innerhalb weniger Monate, im Kulturbetrieb wieder Fuß zu fassen und Erfolge als Theaterautor und Publizist zu feiern. Der jüdische Remigrant Weigel war damit eine große Ausnahme, sowohl was den frühen Zeitpunkt als auch was die erfolgreiche Integration betrifft. Das Buchprojekt fragt nach den Bedingungen und Voraussetzungen dieser einflussreichen und exemplarischen Nachkriegskarriere. Damit wird eine wissenschaftliche Monographie zum Schaffen und Wirken Weigels, dessen Todestag sich 2016 zum 25. Mal jährt, vorliegen. Zentral für die Arbeit ist die Frage nach den Grundlagen der Remigration im Exil. Bei der Beleuchtung der Weigel’schen Remigration ist der Blick auf seinen Umgang mit den Opferbegriff von großer Wichtigkeit.
