In Catherine Hickley’s highly topical and nuanced book on the “Gurlitt Case”, it once more becomes apparent that dealing with the Nazi past cannot be viewed in black and white; there are, in fact, many grey areas. Gurlitt’s “treasure” is a collection of looted art of vast and impressive dimensions. Cornelius Gurlitt stored 1,258 pieces of fine art in his private apartment in Munich, a vast amount even for a museum. More pieces were found in Salzbzurg. “Gurlitt’s Treasure” contains a well-founded investigation of the “Gurlitt Case”. To achieve this, Catherine Hickley carried out meticulous archive research and traced a number of heirs entitled to the pictures. Her search for the pictures, “criminals” and “victims”, takes the reader to Breslau during the Night of Broken Glass, post-war Dresden and present-day Bern. The book was translated into German by Karin Fleischanderl.

In Catherine Hickleys hochaktuellem und differenziertem Buch über den „Fall Gurlitt“ wird einmal mehr klar, dass es im Umgang mit dem Nationalsozialismus nicht nur Schwarz und Weiß, sondern viele Grauzonen gibt. Gurlitts „Schatz“ ist eine Raubkunst-Sammlung, die durch ihre Größe beeindruckt. 1258 Werke der bildenden Kunst, selbst für ein Museum keine geringe Zahl, lagerte Cornelius Gurlitt in seiner Münchner Privatwohnung; ein weiterer Fund in Salzburg folgte. Nun erscheint mit „Gurlitts Schatz“ eine fundierte Untersuchung des „Falls Gurlitt“. Dafür hat Catherine Hickley akribische Archivrecherche betrieben und rechtmäßige Erben der Bilder aufgespürt. Ihre Suche nach den Bildern, „Tätern“ und „Opfern“ führt ins Breslau der Reichskristallnacht, ins Dresden der Nachkriegszeit und das Bern der Gegenwart. Die Übersetzung des Buchs aus dem Englischen wird von Karin Fleischanderl vorgenommen.
