The Living Room of the Glück Family

The living room of the Glück family is a completely normal Viennese living room from the 1920s; at the same time it is not. While most furniture owned by Viennese Jews was “aryanized” and remained in Vienna after 1938, the living room furniture of the Glück family made it to New York in 1939. The room tells the story of a Jewish family of furriers. In 2012 the apartment was dissolved following the deaths of father Erwin and his second wife Herta Glück Kleeblatt. The Jewish Museum is celebrating the return of this Viennese living room from New York with a very personal exhibition, which is not only about living but also about flight and migration in the 20th century.

Das Wohnzimmer der Familie Glück ist ein ganz normales Wiener Wohnzimmer aus den 1920er-Jahren und auch wieder nicht: Denn während die meisten Möbel der Wiener Jüdinnen und Juden in den Jahren nach 1938 „arisiert“ in Wien zurückblieben, erreichte die Wohnzimmer-Einrichtung der Familie Glück 1939 New York. Das Zimmer erzählt die Geschichte einer jüdischen Kürschner-Familie. 2012 wurde die Wohnung mit dem Wohnzimmer in New York aufgelassen, nachdem nicht nur Vater Erwin, sondern auch seine zweite Frau Herta Glück Kleeblatt gestorben war. Das Jüdische Museum Wien feiert die Rückkehr dieses Wiener Wohnzimmers aus New York mit einer sehr persönlichen Ausstellung, die nicht nur über das Wohnen, sondern auch über Flucht und Migration im 20. Jahrhundert erzählt.
