This book traces the moving life of Vilma Steindling. Vilma Steindling was born in Vienna in 1919. In 1937, as a young girl, she followed her boyfriend to Paris as she was in danger in Vienna for being an active member of the Communist Youth Association. Both the Communist Party and the Communist Youth Association were banned under Kurt Schussnig. Following the occupation of France by Nazi Germany she worked in the resistance and got involved in so-called “girls work”. In 1942, she was betrayed and arrested, sent to Auschwitz concentration camp and survived the death march to Ravensbrück concentration camp, where she was freed by the Swedish Red Cross. In autumn 1945 Vilma returned to Vienna and discovered that her boyfriend had been murdered in Dachau. She trained as a carer, married, had two children and was involved in dangerous conspiratorial activities for the Austrian Communist Party. She left the Party in 1968 but stayed true to her ideals for which she had fought until her death.

Dieses Buch zeichnet den berührenden Lebensweg von Frau Vilma Steindling nach. Vilma Steindling wurde 1919 in Wien geboren. 1937 folgt sie als junges Mädchen ihrem Lebensgefährten nach Paris, da sie in Wien als aktives Mitglied im Kommunistischen Jugendverband gefährdet ist. Sowohl die Kommunistische Partei als auch der KJV sind unter Kurt Schuschnigg verboten. Nach der Besetzung Frankreichs durch Hitlerdeutschland arbeitet sie in der Résistance und engagiert sich in der sogenannten „Mädelarbeit“. 1942 wird sie denunziert und verhaftet, kommt ins KZ Auschwitz und überlebt den Todesmarsch ins KZ Ravensbrück, wo sie vom schwedischen Roten Kreuz befreit wird. Im Herbst 1945 kehrt Vilma nach Wien zurück und erfährt, dass ihr Lebensgefährte in Dachau ermordet wurde. Sie macht eine Ausbildung als Fürsorgerin, heiratet, bekommt zwei Kinder und beteiligt sich an gefährlichen konspirativen Tätigkeiten der KPÖ. 1968 tritt sie aus der Partei aus, bleibt aber den Idealen, für die sie kämpfte, bis zu ihrem Tod treu.
