This book tells the stories of eight female “career criminals” from Austria, previously convicted for carrying out abortions or for theft and deported to Ravensbrück women’s concentration camp. The author was able to evaluate court files and other documents for many such women and, ultimately, to portray the cases of eight Austrian women who were interned at Revensbrück as career criminals. Three of these women had several convictions for theft; five had numerous convictions for carrying out abortions on other women. The eight women lived in Upper Austria, Tyrol and Styria. Using the stories of these eight lives the author describes how “preventative crime fighting” by the Nazi criminal police in Austria worked and what role was played by the judiciary.

Dieses Buch erzählt die Geschichten von acht „Berufsverbrecherinnen“ – vorbestrafte Abtreiberinnen und Diebinnen aus Österreich, die ins Frauen-KZ Ravensbrück deportiert wurden. Die Autorin konnte für zahlreiche der genannten Frauen Gerichtsakten und weitere Dokumente auswerten und schlussendlich acht Fallgeschichten österreichischer Frauen, die als „Berufsverbrecherinnen“ im KZ Ravensbrück interniert waren, darstellen. Drei dieser Frauen waren mehrfach wegen Diebstahls, fünf mehrfach wegen Abtreibungen, die sie an anderen Frauen durchgeführt hatten, vorbestraft. Die acht Frauen lebten in Oberösterreich, Tirol und der Steiermark. Anhand dieser acht Lebensverläufe stellt die Autorin dar, wie die „vorbeugende Verbrechensbekämpfung“ durch die nationalsozialistische Kriminalpolizei in Österreich funktioniert hat und welche Rolle die Justiz dabei spielte.
