Description

Josef Anton Baldermann was one of those Viennese laborers who were active in the many small Communist operative cells. We know little of people like him; the story “Baldermann” aims to make his life story and that of his family available to the public. The mundane, unassuming, passionate and politically straightforward man from a so-called “modest” Social Democratic laborer’s background that is suddenly and unexpectedly taken to its existential limit by the Nazi system of persecution – the death sentence for the family breadwinner and father to young son. One day in October 1942 in Berlin, at the age of barely 40, he and seven other laborers from Brigittenau, Vienna, were found guilty of planning to commit high treason and sentenced to death. His diary and letters from prison can be seen as a central part of his written legacy. This consists of all of his letters from his 19 months in prison prior to his execution in Berlin-Plötzensee in March 1943 and the letters from his relatives received during his imprisonment that provide a vivid portrayal of their situation.
