The Holocaust History Project – Prevention of Violence also Means Learning from the Past

The Holocaust History Project – Gewaltprävention heißt auch: aus der Vergangenheit lernen

 

Until now, a workshop held within the scope of the project has lasted for four teaching hours or, upon request, one morning. Based on the evaluations and experience gained in previous phases of the project, we propose that five teaching hours be set aside for the workshop. Important prerequisites for the workshops are that the students have already learned about World War II in their history lessons and are aware of the historical facts. Bearing this in mind, the workshops are aimed at years seven to nine. The following questions/subjects are discussed and addressed interactively with the children, in keeping with their age and level of knowledge and with the aim of creating an understanding that violence prevention today must mean learning from the past: individual – structural – cultural violence, during and after World War II; dimensions of violence and their “human side”; perpetrators, victims and “the others”; resistance – what does that mean; what can we learn from the past? Wiedergutmachung – is it possible? The subject of discussion will therefore be the Shoah, i.e. the genocide of the Jews by the Nazis under the Third Reich with a focus on World War II.

Ein Workshop im Rahmen dieses Projekts dauerte bisher vier Unterrichtsstunden beziehungsweise auf Wunsch einen Vormittag. Basierend auf den Evaluierungen und der Erfahrung aus den vorherigen Projektphasen regen wir für Projektphase IV an, den Workshop immer mit fünf Unterrichtsstunden anzuberaumen. Wichtig für die Durchführung des Workshops ist, dass die SchülerInnen den Zweiten Weltkrieg bereits im Geschichtsunterricht behandelt und sich entsprechend Wissen über die historischen Fakten angeeignet haben. Demnach sind SchülerInnen der siebenten bis zehnten Schulstufe Zielgruppe des Projekts. Folgende Fragen/Themen werden mit den SchülerInnen alters- und wissensadäquat diskutiert und interaktiv erarbeitet, mit dem Ziel, Verständnis dafür zu erlangen, dass Gewaltprävention heute auch heißen muss von gestern zu lernen: Personelle – strukturelle – kulturelle Gewalt während und nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg; Gewaltdimensionen und ihre „menschliche Seite“; Von Tätern, Opfern und „den anderen“; Widerstand – was heißt das; Was können wir aus der Vergangenheit lernen? Wiedergutmachung – ist das möglich? Es gilt die Shoah, also den Genozid an den Juden im Dritten Reich durch die Nationalsozialisten mit Fokus auf den Zweiten Weltkrieg zu thematisieren.
