The main aims of the civic courage training are to raise awareness about the possibilities of courageous action, to expand the range of behavior available to us at different levels and to teach about civic courage and social responsibility yesterday and today. Taking rescuers and helpers as examples, participants are taught why people made the choice to help others, despite the extreme circumstances. Civic courage during the Nazi period – exceptional situations surrounding the scope for carrying out acts of civic courage – can be found in authoritarian and highly repressive systems. During the Nazi period, acts of civic courage that broke the narrow boundaries of the system and were deemed politically unacceptable became acts of political resistance. The brave actions of a few people at a time when the vast majority of people chose to fit in or look the other way often later resulted in feelings of guilt or shame, which frequently led to resistance against these acts or doubt as to their occurrence. Therefore, the the civil courage training sessions will cover civic courage today and civic courage during the Nazi era. Taking a look at people who showed civic courage will create a link between then and the young people’s present.

Die zentralen Ziele des Zivilcourage-Trainings sind die Sensibilität für zivilcouragiertes Handeln zu erhöhen, das eigene Verhaltensrepertoire auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen zu erweitern sowie Zivilcourage und gesellschaftliche Verantwortung im Gestern und Heute zu vermitteln. An Beispielen von RetterInnen und HelferInnen wird vermittelt, warum sich Menschen trotz der extremen Rahmenbedingungen entschieden haben, anderen Menschen zu helfen. Zivilcourage zur Zeit des Nationalsozialismus – Ausnahmesituationen hinsichtlich der Handlungsspielräume von Zivilcourage finden sich in autoritären und hoch repressiven Systemen. In der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus wurde zivilcouragiertes Handeln, das die eng gesetzten Grenzen des Systems überschritt und als politisch unannehmbar eingestuft wurde, zum (politischen) Widerstand. Das mutige Handeln weniger Menschen in einer Zeit, in der die Mehrheit angepasst lebt oder „mitlief“, löste später oft Gefühle der Schuld oder Scham aus, was nicht selten sogar zu Anzweiflung oder Abwehr dieser Handlungen führte. In den Zivilcourage-Trainings wird neben Zivilcourage heuer auch Zivilcourage zur Zeit des Nationalsozialismus behandelt. Durch die Auseinandersetzung mit Menschen, die in der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus zivilen Mut zeigten, wird ein Bogen in die Gegenwart der Jugendlichen gespannt.
