Year of Remembrance 2018: History through the lense of political and public communication

The research project will take a look at the public and political references and the related messages being sent out and interpretations offered within the scope of the Year of Remembrance 2018. An interdisciplinary team of researchers from the field of political science, contemporary history and the digital humanities (corpus linguistics) will dedicate itself to the analysis of political and public communication activities in the media. Specifically, they are interested in the communication practices of political figures that are reflected in the traditional media and so-called new media. One of the main methods used in the analysis will be a focus on visual methods and on corpus linguistic procedures. Particularly worthy of note is the innovative methodical approach of combining discourse analysis, visual studies, focus groups and quantitative corpus linguistic media analysis. The research project aims, on the one hand, to create a connection between areas of research that had previously only been considered in isolation: policies of remembrance/culture of remembrance and political communication. On the other hand, strategies of political figures will be illuminated and analyzed with reference to examples from the past. The outcome of the project may also have effects reaching beyond the academic field, creating a sharper awareness in relation to the importance of visual and textual competence in the field of political education and better deciphering and understanding political narratives. Private lecturer Dr. Karin Liebhart of the University of Vienna and private lecturer Dr. Heidemarie Uhl from the Institute for Cultural Science and the History of Theater will work together on the research project.

Das Forschungsprojekt interessiert sich für diese öffentlichen und politischen Bezugnahmen sowie für die damit verbundenen Botschaften und Deutungsangebote im Rahmen des Gedenkjahres 2018. Ein interdisziplinäres Team aus ForscherInnen der Politikwissenschaft, der Zeitgeschichte und der Digital Humanities (Korpuslinguistik) widmet sich der Analyse politischer und öffentlicher medialer Kommunikationsaktivitäten. Dabei handelt es sich um jene Kommunikation, die von politischen AkteurInnen ausgeübt wird und die in klassischen Medien und so genannten neuen Medien reflektiert wird. Einen methodischen Schwerpunkt der geplanten Analyse bildet der Fokus auf visuelle Methoden und korpuslinguistische Verfahren. Besonders hervorzuheben ist die innovative methodische Zugangsweise einer Verbindung von Diskursanalyse, Visual Studies, Fokusgruppen und quantitativer korpuslinguistischer Medienanalyse. Das Forschungsprojekt verfolgt einerseits das Ziel, die bislang weitgehend voneinander isoliert betrachteten Forschungsbereiche der Gedächtnispolitik sowie der Erinnerungskultur und politischen Kommunikation miteinander zu verbinden. Andererseits werden Strategien politischer AkteurInnen im Rückgriff auf die Vergangenheit beleuchtet und analysiert. Projektergebnisse können auch über das wissenschaftliche Feld hinaus zu einer stärkeren Sensibilisierung in Bezug auf die demokratiepolitische Bedeutung visueller und textlicher Kompetenz in politischer Bildungsarbeit sowie zur Entschlüsselung und zum besseren Verständnis politischer Narrative beitragen. An dem Forschungsprojekt werden Frau PD Dr. Karin Liebhart von der Universität Wien in Kooperation mit Frau PD Dr. Heidemarie Uhl vom Institut für Kulturwissenschaft und Theatergeschichte arbeiten.
