The exhibition presents the biographies of 12 female persecutees whose lives were altered dramatically by marriages of convenience. Some of the marriages took place in Vienna; in other cases the women were already in exile. Many women chose not to mention their marriage of convenience when telling the story of their flight. Yet it was almost always a successful survival strategy and, as such, a matter of life and death for the women and their children. The aim is to remove the taboo surrounding these marriages and show the women as people who took proactive steps to outsmart the laws directed against them for their own protection. The exhibition is based on a research project “Marriages of convenience during the Nazi era” by Irene Messinger, which was subsidized by the National Fund. The women she selected were all Viennese women or women with a link to Vienna who were persecuted as (half) Jews by the Nazis. At the start of the exhibition the various life paths of the women will be depicted and there will be a large scale photo of each woman.

Die Ausstellung stellt 12 Biographien verfolgter Frauen vor, deren Leben durch ihre Scheinehe eine entscheidende Wendung nahm. Die Ehen wurden zum Teil noch in Wien geschlossen. In anderen Fällen befanden sich die Frauen bereits in einem Exilland. Viele Frauen verschwiegen ihre Scheinehe als Detail ihrer Fluchtgeschichte. Doch war sie fast immer eine erfolgreiche Überlebensstrategie und somit für das Leben der Frauen und ihrer Nachkommen existentiell. Das Thema der Scheinehe soll enttabuisiert werden und die Frauen als aktive Akteurinnen gezeigt werden, die eine an sich gegen sie gerichtete Gesetzeslage zum eigenen Schutz überlisteten. Die Ausstellung basiert auf dem Forschungsprojekt „Scheinehen in der NS-Zeit“ von Irene Messinger. Dieses Projekt wurde bereits durch den Nationalfonds gefördert. Die Auswahl behandelt Wienerinnen oder Frauen mit Wien-Bezug, die im NS-Regime als (Halb)Jüdinnen verfolgt wurden. Im Eingangsbereich der Ausstellung wird eine Grafik zu sehen sein, welche die unterschiedlichen Lebenswege der Frauen darstellt. Jede Frau wird durch ein großformatiges Foto porträtiert.
