In summer 1938, Karl Tuppa, former lecturer at the Institute of Anthropology at the University of Vienna, measured and photographed 80 % of the population of St. Jakob im Rosental – around 3,200 people – using “ethnological” criteria. Following intensive research the Department of Anthropology at the University of Vienna was able to unearth over 6,000 anthropometric photographic prints and the corresponding data sheets of this “racial” examination. The material serves as the starting point for the exhibition “Measuring Office”, which will be shown between July and September in St. Jakob im Rosental in cooperation with the Slovene Cultural Association Roz/Slovensko prosvetno drustvo Roz and the Association for Industrial Culture and the History of Daily Life to mark the Year of Remembrance 2018. The main thematic focuses of the exhibition are the Nazi racial ideology and racial and national policies in Carinthia, the inglorious role of various scientific establishments in service of Nazi policies, biographies of selected Carinthian “racial and national identity scholars”, “racial research” as an anthropological discipline. In addition it covers the complete spectrum from the ideological background of the “ethnological” examination in St. Jakob im Rosental to general racist statements made in the present. In addition to the historical part of the exhibition, artists also render their interpretations of the phenomenon of racial ideologies. A publication will also be issued about the exhibition.

Im Sommer 1938 hatte Karl Tuppa, damaliger Dozent am Anthropologischen Institut der Universität Wien, 80 Prozent der Bevölkerung von St. Jakob im Rosental – das waren rund 3.200 Personen – nach „rassenkundlichen“ Kriterien vermessen und fotografiert. Aufgrund intensiver Nachforschungen konnten am Department of Anthropology an der Universität Wien über 6.000 anthropometrische fotografische Abzüge sowie die dazugehörigen Datenblätter dieser „rassenkundlichen“ Untersuchung gefunden werden. Das Material bildet den Ausgangspunkt für die Ausstellung „Vermessungsamt“, die in Kooperation zwischen dem Slowenischen Kulturverein Roz/Slovensko prosvetno drustvo Roz und dem Verein Industriekultur und Alltagsgeschichte (VIA) anlässlich des Gedenkjahres 2018 von Juni bis September in St. Jakob im Rosental gezeigt wird. Inhaltliche Schwerpunkte der Ausstellung sind die Nationalsozialistische Rassenideologie und Volkstumspolitik in Kärnten, die unrühmliche Rolle diverser Wissenschaftseinrichtungen im Dienste der NS-Politik, Biographien ausgewählter Kärntner „Volkstumswissenschafter“, die „Rassenforschung“ als Wissenschaftszweig der Anthropologie. Des Weiteren spannt sich der inhaltliche Bogen vom ideologischen Umfeld der „rassenkundlichen“ Untersuchung in St. Jakob im Rosental bis zu allgemein rassistischen Äußerungen in der Gegenwart. Neben dem historischen Teil der Ausstellung, zu der eine Publikation erscheinen wird, setzen sich KünstlerInnen mit dem Phänomen rassistischer Ideologien auseinander.
