“MusicaFemina” is an exhibition in Austria about female musicians with an emphasis on both artistic elements and civil society. It is a project about equal rights and human rights. MusicaFemina is a temporary exhibition with a focus of spatial and sound installations. In terms of content, it deals with the work of deceased and present-day composers and conductors up to and including the music of Madonna. Part of the exhibition will deal with their ostracism by the Nazis and female musicianship during the Nazi era. The following five women will be included in the exhibition: Vally Weigl, Elsa Bienenfeld, Ilse Weber, Lily Lieser and Lena Stein-Schneider. The exhibition’s design includes flooring made of trampled sheet music, 1000 pages made of Tyvek. The sheets of music contain the scores of compositions by the ostracized female composers and are separate and only loosely attached to each other so that during the course of the exhibition they become crumpled and raised. The ceiling is suspended to create a feeling of constriction. The silhouettes of each female composer are cut from metal sheets. On the reverse of the silhouettes there are “open books” or tablets with information about the composers. Acoustic keyboards and headphones will also be provided for audio samples. The light installation causes the silhouettes to cast long shadows.

„MusicaFemina“ ist eine Ausstellung in Österreich zum weiblichen Musikschaffen – mit sowohl künstlerischem als auch zivilgesellschaftlichem Fokus. Sie ist ein Projekt zu Gleichberechtigung und Menschenrechten. MusicaFemina ist eine temporäre Themenausstellung mit Schwerpunkt auf Raum- und Klanginstallationen. Inhaltlich umfasst sie das Schaffen von verstorbenen und aktuellen Komponistinnen und Dirigentinnen bis hin zum Musikschaffen von Madonna. Einen Teil der Ausstellung wird die NS-Verfemung betreffen sowie das weibliche Musikleben in der NS-Zeit. Folgende fünf Frauen werden Inhalt der Ausstellung sein: Vally Weigl, Elsa Bienenfeld, Ilse Weber, Lily Lieser und Lena Stein-Schneider. Die künstlerische Gestaltung ist so angelegt, dass der Boden aus „zertretenen Noten“, 1000 Blätter aus Tyvek – bedruckt, besteht. Die Notenblätter sind die Kompositionen der verfemten Komponistinnen und sind einzeln und lose befestigt, sodass sie sich im Lauf der Ausstellung durch das Begehen aufstellen und verknittern. Die Decke ist abgehängt, um ein beengtes Gefühl zu erzeugen. Die Silhouetten der einzelnen Komponistinnen sind aus Metallblech ausgeschnitten. An der Rückseite der Silhouetten befinden sich „offene Bücher“ beziehungsweise Tablets mit Information über die Komponistinnen. Dabei werden Akustik-Tastatur und Kopfhörer für Hörbeispiele eingesetzt. Die Licht-Installation lässt die Silhouetten lange Schatten werfen.
