The Kobersdorf synagogue is the only surviving synagogue of the renowned seven Jewish communities of Burgenland. During the Nazi era its contents were looted; after the war it was left to fall to ruin; in 1995 it was bought by the Association for the Preservation and Cultural Usage of the Kobersdorf Synagogue from the Jewish Community on the condition it would preserve the synagogue as a memorial for the obliterated Jewish communities and restore it step by step. Since 2004 the successful annual event series “Culture in the Temple” has been held in the dilapidated synagogue. With its program celebrating Jewish history, culture and tradition the event organizers want to keep alive the country’s centuries-old and abruptly extinguished Jewish culture and provide a fitting place for Jewish cultural heritage in the present. The event series was well received by the public from the outset. In this year’s Year of Remembrance, Culture in the Temple is dedicated to the Jewish contribution to the cultural renaissance of the interwar years that came to a brutal end in 1938. The event series will take place in August 2018.

Der Kobersdorfer Tempel ist die einzig erhaltene Gemeindesynagoge der berühmten jüdischen Siebengemeinden des Burgenlands. Während des Nationalsozialismus ihrer Einrichtung beraubt, nach dem Krieg jahrzehntelang dem Verfall preisgegeben, wurde sie 1995 vom Verein zur Erhaltung und kulturellen Nutzung der Synagoge Kobersdorf von der Jüdischen Gemeinde gekauft, mit dem Versprechen die Synagoge als Denkmal für die ausgelöschten jüdischen Gemeinden zu erhalten und schrittweise zu restaurieren. Seit 2004 findet in der halbzerfallenen Synagoge jährlich die erfolgreiche Veranstaltungsreihe „Kultur im Tempel“ statt. Mit dem Programm, dessen Inhalte der jüdischen Geschichte, Kultur und Tradition gewidmet sind, wollen die Veranstalter die Erinnerung an die jahrhundertealte, 1938 jäh ausgelöschte jüdische Kultur des Landes lebendig erhalten und dem jüdischen Kulturgut auch in der Gegenwart einen angemessenen Platz einräumen. Die Veranstaltungsreihe wurde von Anfang an von den Besuchern gut angenommen. Im heurigen Gedenkjahr ist Kultur im Tempel dem jüdischen Beitrag zur kulturellen Blüte der Zwischenkriegszeit gewidmet, die 1938 ein gewaltsames Ende fand. Die Veranstaltungsreihe findet im August 2018 statt.
