The Baranka Park remembrance ceremony will take place for the tenth time on 20 May 2018 and pursues the aim of reminding the public of the Roma and Sinti who were deported by the Nazi regime in 1941 and to send a signal against forgetting. For a long time, the Hellerwiese in the 10th District, today Baranka Park, was a camping ground for Roma, Sinti and Lovara families. This historic location is named after Harri Stojka’s grandmother Baranka. She and around 200 other family members who lived on the Hellerwiese were deported by the Nazi regime in 1941. The remembrance ceremony will recall the victims but also provide the public with information on the life and culture of the Roma and Sinti, as well as the Jewish and Viennese culture. Renowned musicians, authors, and important figures from public life will make appearances on this day to present their cultures and to create a space for getting to know each other and cultural exchange, breaking down prejudices and making a contribution towards living together in peace.

Die Baranka Park Gedenkfeier wird am 20. Mai 2018 zum zehnten Mal organisiert und umgesetzt mit dem Ziel, die Öffentlichkeit an die Roma und Sinti, die vom NS-Regime im Jahr 1941 verschleppt worden sind, zu erinnern und ein Zeichen gegen das Vergessen zu setzen. Lange Zeit war die Hellerwiese im 10. Bezirk, heute Baranka Park benannt, Lager- und Rastplatz der Sinti, Roma und Lovarafamilien. Dieser historische Ort wurde nach Harri Stojkas Ur-Großmutter Baranka benannt. Sie und etwa 200 weitere Familienmitglieder, die auf der Hellerwiese gelebt hatten, wurden 1941 vom NS-Regime verschleppt. Mit der Gedenkfeier soll der Opfer gedacht werden, es sollen aber auch das Leben und die Kultur der Roma und Sinti sowie die jüdische und Wiener Kultur vermittelt werden. Namhafte MusikerInnen, AutorInnen und wichtige Persönlichkeiten des öffentlichen Lebens treten an diesem Tag auf, um ihre Kultur zu präsentieren und einen Raum für Kennenlernen und kulturellen Austausch zu schaffen, um so Vorurteile aufzubrechen und einen Beitrag für ein friedliches Zusammenleben zu leisten.
