It is easy to provoke confusion, chaos and distrust – something that the Americans used to their advantage during World War II. With their guidelines on sabotage and psychological warfare they essentially handed the anti-Nazi resistance movement a handbook on how to destroy a system from the inside using methods that would still be effective today. The American OSS, “Office of Strategic Service”, the predecessor of the CIA during World War II, published two texts in 1943 and 1944: the “Moral Operations Field Manual” was intended for use by OSS officers and described in detail how to deconstruct a state. The “Simple Sabotage Field Manuel” provided information to sympathizers on how they could support the resistance efforts against Hitler using relatively simple methods. Both books uniquely demonstrated how the OSS – which became known as a result of prominent supporters such as Marlene Dietrich and Thomas Mann – worked against the successful Nazi propaganda with targeted acts of sabotage.

Verwirrung, Chaos und Misstrauen sind einfach zu stiften – ein Wissen, das sich die Amerikaner während des Zweiten Weltkriegs zunutze machten. Mit ihrem Leitfaden über Sabotage und psychologische Kriegsführung gaben sie dem Widerstand gegen das Naziregime eine Anleitung in die Hand, wie man ein System von innen zernagt – mit Mitteln, die auch heute noch funktionieren würden. Das US-amerikanische OSS, „Office of Strategic Service“, Vorgänger des CIA im Zweiten Weltkrieg, gab 1943 und 1944 zwei Texte heraus: Das „Morale Operations Field Manual“ war für OSS-Offiziere gedacht und beschreibt akribisch, wie man einen Staat dekonstruiert. Das „Simple Sabotage Field Manual“ informierte alle Sympathisanten darüber, wie sie mit relativ einfachen Mitteln den Widerstand gegen Hitler unterstützen konnten. Beide Bücher zeigen auf einzigartige Art und Weise, wie das OSS – bekannt durch prominente Unterstützer wie Marlene Dietrich oder Thomas Mann – mit gezielter Sabotage einen Gegenpol zur erfolgreichen Nazi-Propaganda schuf.
