Following a general overview of the time immediately prior to the “Anschluss”, the first section will provide a chronological overview of the years 1938–1945 in the town of Grieskirchen. At that time, Castle Hartheim in Alkoven was situated in the merged district Grieskirchen-Eferding. As such the official and party-political responsibility for this institution of murder, that includes its staff, was answerable to the Nazi Party district organization and the Grieskirchen district administration. The second main subject area involves ecclesiastical daily life of the Parish of Grieskirchen in the struggle between the Church and the Third Reich. In these chapters the author will portray the fates of over 50 clergymen under the Nazi regime with a particular connection to Grieskirchen, above all the priest and resistance member and concentration camp victim Dr. Johann Gruber (died 1944 in Gusen concentration camp). A series of further priests also spent time in imprisonment during the Nazi era. The chapter also provides an insight into the life of the nuns (Borromini, Franciscans, Dominicans) who also operated in the Grieskirchen area and suffered under the Church struggle. It will also document the “Nazi bell-theft” carried out in the interest of the armaments industry.

Nach einem allgemeinen Überblick über die unmittelbare Zeit vor dem „Anschluss“ wird in einem ersten Abschnitt ein chronologischer Überblick über die Jahre 1938–1945 in der Stadt Grieskirchen gegeben. Das Schloss Hartheim in Alkoven lag im damals fusionierten Kreis Grieskirchen-Eferding. Damit war die behördliche sowie parteipolitische Zuständigkeit für dieses Mordinstitut, das heißt dessen Personal, in der NSDAP Kreisorganisation beziehungsweise im Landratsamt Grieskirchen angesiedelt. Der zweite große Themenkreis behandelt den kirchlichen Alltag der katholischen Stadtpfarre Grieskirchen im Kirchenkampf des „Dritten Reichs“. In diesen Kapiteln zeigt der Autor die individuellen Schicksale von über 50 Geistlichen unter dem Hakenkreuz mit besonderem Grieskirchen-Bezug, allen voran des aus Grieskirchen stammenden Priesters und im Widerstand tätigen KZ-Opfers „Dr. Johann Gruber“ (+1944 KZ Gusen.) Eine Reihe weiterer Priester waren in der NS-Zeit zeitweise in Haft. Das Kapitel gibt außerdem Einblick in das Leben der in Grieskirchen wirkenden und unter dem Kirchenkampf leidenden geistlichen Schwestern (Borromäerinnen, Franziskanerinnen, Dominikanerinnen). Zudem wird der „NS-Glockenraub“ im Interesse der Rüstungsindustrie dokumentiert.
