The Austrian Socialist Otto Leichter (1897–1973) wrote a book – following the February fights of 1934 he wrote from exile and in 1939 still under the shadow of the “Anschluss” and before the ultimate destruction of democratic Czechoslovakia – on the political situation of the time. The book, “Death of a Nation. Austria 1934–1938”, published in Paris under the pseudonym Georg Weiser, is not widely available in Austria, even in specialist libraries, despite the fact that it provides an astonishingly precise analysis of the Austrian and European political situation shortly before the outbreak of World War II, which is also in keeping with the latest research. Strictly speaking, “Death of a Nation” may not be a scientific book. Leichter’s works constantly oscillate between essay, journalism and science at any rate: “Death of a Nation” lies somewhere in between, it is simultaneously an account and an analysis; perhaps more of a political indictment about the failures of a reactionary elite running headfirst into its own demise as a result of its own ineptitude and delusions. Nevertheless, it is probably one of the most compact, focused and clearest descriptions of “Finis Austriae 1938” to exist. The VWI now plans to publish this work with footnotes and a foreword as the third volume of its study series.

Der österreichische Sozialist Otto Leichter (1897-1973) verfasste – nach den Februarkämpfen 1934 im Exil – 1939 noch unter dem Eindruck des 'Anschlusses' und noch vor der endgültigen Zerschlagung der demokratischen Tschechoslowakei ein Buch zur aktuellen politischen Lage. Sein unter dem Pseudonym Georg Wieser in Paris erschienenes Buch „Ein Staat stirbt. Österreich 1934-1938" ist in Österreich – auch in wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken – nur beschränkt verfügbar, obwohl es eine erstaunlich, auch angesichts jüngster historischen Forschungen präzise Analyse der österreichischen, aber auch der europäischen Lage kurz vor Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkriegs bietet. „Ein Staat stirbt" mag kein wissenschaftliches Buch im engeren Sinn sein, Leichters Werke oszillieren ja sowieso mit seinen Werken ständig zwischen Essay, Journalismus und Wissenschaft: „Ein Staat stirbt" liegt daher irgendwo dazwischen, ist Beschreibung und Analyse zugleich, vielleicht noch mehr eine politische Anklageschrift über das Versagen einer reaktionären Elite, die in ihrer Unfähigkeit und Verblendung ins eigene Verderben rennt und über die das Versagen der westlichen Demokratien. Dennoch ist es wohl einer der dichtesten, schärfsten und klarsten Beschreibung des „Finis Austriae 1938". Das VWI beabsichtigt nun dieses Werk mit Fußnoten kommentiert und mit einem Vorwort versehen als dritten Band seiner Studienreihe zu veröffentlichen.
