Description
A film about Elsie Slonim. The record of a long journey that began on 21 November 2017 in Brooklyn and took Elsie Slonim to Hungary and Romania, back to America several times, to Israel and, lastly, to Cyprus. Elsie Slonim has witnessed two world wars, Nazism, and the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. Since the death of her husband David in 2007 she has lived as the sole civilian in the military restricted zone, without any guarantee for her safety. During her rip to Austria the camera accompanies her to Baden, Carinthia and Vienna, which she attends the opera for the first time in 50 years to watch the “Rosenkavalier” by Richard Strauss. This project is a documentary about the impotency of the individual when faced with the political turmoil of a century and the strong will of a woman not to give up despite this.

Ein Film über Elsie Slonim. Das Protokoll einer langen Reise, die am 21.11.1917 in Brooklyn beginnt und welche Elsie Slonim nach Ungarn und Rumänien führt, mehrmals nach Amerika zurück, nach Israel und letztlich nach Zypern. Als Zeitzeugin hat Elsie Slonim zwei Weltkriege miterlebt, den Nationalsozialismus sowie die türkische Invasion auf Zypern. Seit dem Tod ihres Mannes David im Jahr 2007 lebt sie alleine als einziger Mensch im militärischen Sperrgebiet, ohne Garantien und Sicherheiten. Bei ihrem Österreich Besuch begleitet die Kamera sie durch Baden, Kärnten und Wien, wo sie nach 50 Jahren das erste Mal wieder in die Oper gehen wird, um sich Richard Strauss‘ „Der Rosenkavalier“ anzusehen. Dieses Projekt ist eine Dokumentation über die Ohnmacht des einzelnen gegenüber den politischen Wirren eines Jahrhunderts sowie über den Willen einer starken Frau trotzdem nicht aufzugeben.
