The Vienna Wiesenthal Institute for Holocaust Studies, together with the Institute for Theatre History and Cultural Studies of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, will hold its annual workshop from 11 to 13 June 2019. We were able to obtain the conference rooms and the Sky Lounge at the headquarters of the Austrian Federal Railways at the main railway station as a conference venue. A comprehensive comparative analytical overview of the deportations from the Nazi regime is still a desideratum. The workshop, jointly organized by the Vienna Wiesenthal Institute for Holocaust Studies and the Austrian Academy of Sciences, aims to systematically relate existing research results to one another in a comparative perspective and thus to identify similarities and differences in the organization and execution of the deportations: how was the Jewish population recorded and interned? Which organizations were involved in this process or in the composition of the transports? What was the relationship between the central offices of the Final Solution and local Nazi offices and actors in terms of power and decision-making authority? In what form were Jewish organizations forced to participate? What role did the institutions in Berlin (1939), Prague (1939) and Amsterdam (1941), which were modelled on the Vienna Central Office for Jewish Emigration founded by Adolf Eichmann, play in this context?

Das Wiener Wiesenthal Institut für Holocaust Studien veranstaltet gemeinsam mit dem Institut für Theatergeschichte und Kulturwissenschaften der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften vom 11. bis 13. Juni 2019 seinen alljährlich stattfindenden Workshop. Als Konferenzort konnten wir die Konferenzräumlichkeiten sowie die Sky Lounge im Headquarter der Österreichischen Bundesbahnen am Hauptbahnhof gewinnen. Eine umfassende vergleichend analytische Gesamtdarstellung der Deportationen aus dem nationalsozialistischen Herrschaftsbereich ist nach wie vor ein Desiderat. Der gemeinsam vom Wiener Wiesenthal Institut für Holocaust-Studien und der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften veranstaltete Workshop setzt sich zum Ziel, vorliegende Forschungsergebnisse in vergleichender Perspektive systematisch zueinander in Beziehung zu setzen und so Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede in der Organisation und Durchführung der Deportationen herauszuarbeiten: wie erfolgte die Erfassung und Internierung der jüdischen Bevölkerung? Welche Organisationen waren dabei beziehungsweise an der Zusammenstellung der Transporte beteiligt? Wie gestaltete sich das Verhältnis zwischen den zentralen Schaltstellen der Endlösung und lokalen NS-Stellen und Akteuren in Bezug auf Macht- und Entscheidungskompetenzen? In welcher Form wurden jüdische Organisationen zur Mitwirkung gezwungen? Welche Rolle spielten dabei die nach dem Vorbild der von Adolf Eichmann gegründeten Wiener Zentralstelle für jüdische Auswanderung eingerichteten Institutionen in Berlin (1939), Prag (1939) und Amsterdam (1941)?
