SWC 2022 Survivors’ Toil: The First Decade of Documenting and Studying the Holocaust

 

The Simon Wiesenthal Conference 2022 (SWC 2022) “Survivors’ Toil: The First Decade of Documenting and Studying the Holocaust” is a cooperation between the Vienna Wiesenthal Institute for Holocaust Studies (VWI) and the University of Florida and will take place in Vienna from 2 to 4 November 2022. During the conference, researchers from Europe, Israel and the USA will present and discuss their research findings on those Jewish scholars, private individuals and initiatives who endeavoured to research and document the murder of European Jews in the first post-war decade. The focus will be on the social and historical contexts of the actors’ actions, their interconnections and modes of communication within the respective Jewish communities, their search for an appropriate language and methodology in order to be able to grasp the European-Jewish catastrophe in some way, as well as their efforts to be able to preserve historical sources.

Die Simon Wiesenthal Conference 2022 (SWC 2022) „Survivors’ Toil: The First Decade of Documenting and Studying the Holocaust“ stellt eine Kooperation zwischen dem „Wiener Wiesenthal Institute for Holocaust Studies (VWI)“ und der „University of Florida“ dar und wird vom 2. bis zum 4. November 2022 in Wien stattfinden. Forscher:innen aus Europa, Israel und den USA werden im Zuge der Konferenz ihre Forschungsergebnisse zu jenen jüdischen Wissenschaftler:innen, Privatpersonen und Initiativen präsentieren und zur Diskussion stellen, die sich im ersten Nachkriegsjahrzehnt darum bemühten, den Mord an den europäischen Jüdinnen und Juden zu erforschen und zu dokumentieren. Der Schwerpunkt wird dabei auf die sozialen und historischen Kontexte des Agierens der Akteur:innen, ihre Verflechtungen und Kommunikationsweise innerhalb der jeweiligen jüdischen Gemeinschaften, ihre Suche nach einer angemessenen Sprache und Methodik, um die europäisch-jüdische Katastrophe überhaupt fassen zu können, sowie ihre Bemühungen, historische Quellen bewahren zu können, gelegt werden.
