The Viennese association “Stones of Remembrance” has been active since 2005. Its goal is to commemorate the Jewish victims of the Holocaust and to keep alive the memory of Jewish life and Jewish culture before the Nazis came to power. This commemoration is anchored in the places where Jewish citizens of Vienna lived by placing “Stones of Remembrance”, restoring a place in their home district to those who were murdered. Commemoration takes the form of brass plates, “Stones of Remembrance”, which are set into the ground in front of the houses where the victims lived, as well as wall plaques. The opening ceremonies give the relatives the opportunity for private remembrance. For this year, the association is planning another seven openings in six districts (1,2,4,9,17,20) with around 40 stations of remembrance. All new “Stations of Remembrance” will be formally inaugurated at the opening ceremonies,. The district leaders are invited to each ceremony. Speeches by the district leaders and the association as well as a musical performance form part of the events. Afterwards, everyone visits all the new stations together, and the relatives or initiators are invited to speak.

Der Wiener Verein "Steine der Erinnerung" ist seit dem Jahr 2005 aktiv. Er sich zum Ziel gesetzt, der jüdischen Opfer des Holocaust zu gedenken und die Erinnerung an das jüdische Leben und die jüdische Kultur vor der Machtergreifung der Nationalsozialisten wach zu halten. Dieses Gedenken wird an den Orten, an denen jüdische Wiener*innen gelebt haben, durch das Setzen von "Steinen der Erinnerung" verankert. Den Ermordeten wird wieder ein Platz in ihrem Heimatbezirk gegeben. Die Form des Gedenkens sind Messingplatten, "Steine der Erinnerung", die in den Boden vor den Häusern, in welchen die Opfer ihren Lebensmittelpunkt hatten, eingelassen werden, sowie Wandtafeln. Die Eröffnungsfeiern geben den Angehörigen die Möglichkeit eines privaten Gedenkens. Für das dieses Jahr plant der Verein weitere sieben Eröffnungen in sechs Bezirken (1,2,4,9,17,20) mit ca. 40 Stationen der Erinnerung. Bei den Eröffnungsfeiern werden alle neuen "Stationen der Erinnerung" feierlich eingeweiht. Zu jeder Feier werden die Bezirksvorstehungen eingeladen. Die Reden der Bezirksvorstehung und des Vereins sowie ein musikalischer Beitrag umrahmen die Veranstaltungen. Im Anschluss gehen alle gemeinsam zu allen neuen Stationen, und die Angehörigen bzw. Initiator*innen sind eingeladen zu sprechen.
